If you ask Alana now how she would describe herself, she would respond, “I’m a creative and a deep thinker.” This wasn’t always the case. When introducing herself over the years, Alana realized she always presented herself first with her profession. As a United States Naval Academy graduate and an Officer in the United States Navy, she wrapped herself in that identity and all the traditions that came with it. Over the years and through different experiences, Alana realized her responses to “Tell me about yourself” lacked depth. The depth was there; however, she hadn’t fully explored it within herself and wasn’t wholly comfortable with it.
Now, when someone says, “Tell me about yourself” she doesn’t lead with her profession. She leads with her passions. Alana has a passion for creating, writing, reading, self-growth through reflection, and using the lessons she has learned and lived to help others in the way they need. She believes there is power in sharing our experiences and our stories.
Alana is the author of four poetry collections: Queen Poet Lioness, Intermission I, Intermission II, and Ocean Thoughts. She will publish her next poetry collection, Peace and Power: A Black Poetry Collection, in November 2021, and pre-orders begin Summer 2021.
Alana lives in San Diego, California, serving in the United States Navy and living her passions.
